WI-4a: Large Windows Games ARCADE GAMES: ============= Bang! Bang! Lutton, David B. II $10 #3032 is an artillery game for Windows 3.0. One or two players may participate. Players take turns firing their cannons at each other, taking angle, velocity, and wind speed into consideration. The player who blows their opponent to smithereens is the winner. Blitzer 1.2 Sherman, Steve $10 #12507 is a "Defenders" type of video game in which you fly a helicopter, try to rescue the good guys, shoot down the bad guys, etc. The graphics are good, with a scrolling, mountainous background. (The author can no longer be reached at the address provided in the documentation.) Castle of the Winds 1.1 [COTW] (09-93 CD) Epic MegaGames ASP $27 #27774 is a graphic fantasy role-playing game for Windows. Set in the world of Norse mythology, you must avenge the brutal murder of your godparents. Many monsters will oppose your quest, and many magic objects are available to aid you. You can move and fight using the mouse or keyboard, and there are four difficulty levels Extensive on-line help is available to get you started. Available on 3.5" 1.44mb Megadisk and CD only. Football for Windows Tsoft $25 #4058 is a strategic game of football for Windows. You can play against the computer or a friend. The Offense selects one of twelve plays and its outcome is decided statistically; that is, you have no control over the actual execution of the plays, just the selection. This is the nicest implementation of this type of game we've seen, though we prefer the arcade type of football game (such as Cunning Football, disk #1428 in GA-05) which gives the player more control. Hurricane 1.01 [HURRI1] (08-93 CD) Systems Software Developing, Inc. $15 #12395 is an excellent adaptation of the classic arcade game Tempest. For those of you too young to remember, your firing cursor travels around a variety of geometric mazes while you try to shoot the bad guys that come from the center. VBRUN200 is included on this disk. Master of the Maze 1.0 (MASTMAZ) (10-93 CD) Spice Software $15 #12562 is an incredible 3-D maze game. You must escape multiple levels of twisting mazes, looking for gems and keys. An automapping function helps you see where you have been. There are locked doors, secret doors, ropes to climb, ladders to descend, and much more. 29 mazes are included, ranging from simple to extremely difficult. Paulie Python 1.0 Way Out West-ware $5-$15 #12147 is an exciting Windows variation of the old "snake" game. Your job is to slither around the eight imaginative mazes devouring all the mice and avoiding walls. To make things more difficult, your tail grows after you eat a mouse and other surprise obstacles are scattered about. Prairie Dog Hunt 1.0 for Windows (WINDOG) (10-93 CD) Diversions Software $15 #12563 is based on the cutesy arcade game where you bean helpless prairie dogs with a hammer as they emerge from their holes. However, in this game you have a choice of high-powered firearms and get to blast the furry little pests into a bloody stain. The impressive 256-color animated graphics and digitized sound effects make the massacre all the more enjoyable. You can control the number of dogs, and how many rounds of ammo you get. Watch out for the occasional rabid rodent, because if you get bitten five times you will die of rabies. <WINDOG.PCX>. Runner 1.0 (RUNNER) (10-93 CD) SouthBay Software $20 #12564 is a fast and fun animated game for Windows. Your runner must go from level to level turning on control lights and gathering fuel cannisters. Unfortunately, there is a rather nasty enemy runner looking to throw you to your death and turn off the control lights. Along the way you will encounter bouncing colored marbles that both help and hinder your progress, a wizard that will grant you another life, teleportation pods, and much more. Other features include a MIDI music soundtrack, interesting sound effects, and keyboard/mouse/joystick support. Second Conflict for Windows Galloway, Jerry W. $0 #3688 the leader of the Empire has died without an heir, leaving the Galaxy in utter chaos. You are in command of one fleet and one solar system, and up to four people can play this incredible game of galactic supremacy. You must use scouts to investigate nearby star systems and decide which ones are worth colonizing and which are worth fighting for. You can also look at what opponents are building to determine the size of your attack fleet, and build transports to move troops and colonists to other star systems. Although the author refers to this as a "demo" version, it contains more than enough features to keep any gamer's interest. The graphics and playability are excellent, and help and strategy hints are always available. 640K and at least an EGA monitor are required. Siege! 1.1 (SIEGE) (10-93 CD) Strategic Solutions ASP $20 #12565 is a game where you must try to capture more territory than your opponent. You can play against computer-controlled players or a friend connected via modem/comm port/network. Computer players can be "trained" using artificial intelligence techniques, and the history of each player is saved for future reference. Space Exploration-Mission Alpha (SEMA) (10-93 CD) Jeffrey R. Marken $15 #20275 is an excellent Windows adaptation of the classic arcade game Lunar Lander. You must safely land your spacecraft on the treacherous terrain of several different planets, each with varying amounts of gravity and special obstacles. You must also successfully dock with an orbiting craft after your landing, keeping a careful eye or your fuel level and horizontal/vertical speed. Stardate 2140.2: Battles on Distant Planets Glacier Edge Technology $15-$43 #4125 is a complex sci-fi battlefield strategy game for Windows. In the scenario provided, you must use your troops, tanks, rocket launchers, jets, and helicopters to destroy all opposing force units before they take over the world. You can play against the computer, against a human opponent, or watch the computer battle itself. SoundBlaster compatible cards are supported. Over 400K of disk space is required. Warheads for Windows Steadle, Eric $17 #3775 is an excellent version of the arcade classic Missile Command. Your job is to protect your cities from an unending onslaught of incoming missiles. Watch out for the dreaded Bomber, which appears from nowhere to pepper the skies with deadly Smart Bombs. The graphics and playability are very good. On two different test systems, when we first started the game, it ran very slowly. We restarted Windows and the game and it ran at a more normal speed. BOARD AND STRATEGY GAMES: ========================= Brain Games for Windows 2.0 WinWare $20 #4501 contains a Battleship game set in outer space, a variation of peg solitaire, tic-tac-toe, and several others. VBRUN200 is included. Cell War 1.0 Funk, Al ASP $5 #12021 is a battle to the death for two rival microorganisms. As you place new microbes on the grid, they will either grow and propagate or die depending on their placement. You can play against a friend or a computer opponent with variable levels of difficulty. Requires WIN31 and a mouse. Dare to Dream 1: A Darkened Room Epic MegaGames ASP $34 #20158 is an incredible graphic adventure game for Windows. Poor 10-year old Tyler has been having some really bad dreams lately, and tonight he has been transported into a shadowy nightmare world where he must confront both his happiest memories and a sinister dark force. You will explore many beautifully illustrated areas, solve some puzzles, pick up and use various objects, chat with some unusual beings, and much more in this commercial-quality game. Other features include an excellent Sound Blaster-compatible sound track, an "easy" mode for first-time players, and the ability to save and recall games. If you are a fan of the Leisure Suit Larry/King's Quest type games, this game is sure to please. Requires VGA, a 286+, 1 MB of RAM, DOS 3.0+, and 2.5+ MB of hard disk space. VBRUN100 is included on this disk. (Available on 3.5" 1.44mb MegaDisk ONLY!) Double Match 1.0 [DBM10] (09-93 CD) Puraty, Dan $12 #12475 is a colorful animated game of Concentration for Windows 3.1. Up to four players take turns matching pictures to reveal parts of a hidden phrase. You can play against computer opponents with intelligence levels from dumb to expert. Other features include amusing sound effects, top 10 score recording, hidden bonus squares, and more. A sound card is recommended. VBRUN200 is included on this disk. GatorBytes Game Pak (08-93 CD) GatorBytes $10 each #20214 is a collection of three amusing games for Windows. In Frog Pond you must try to remove all the frogs from a lily pad playing board and leave one in the center. Connect It Up is a challenging game of Connect Four with three difficulty levels. Elimination is an unusual dice game that challenges you to beat the odds. VBRUN100 is included on this disk. Available on 3.5" 1.44 MB MegaDisk only. Get The Girl! [GTG] (09-93 CD) JAB Software $20 #20245 [2 disks] is an adult oriented role-playing game for Windows. The goal of your character is to successfully answer a series of questions by a beautiful girl in hopes of going out with her. When a question is asked, you must choose from a menu of possible answers. If she likes your response, you are allowed more questions. The 256-color pictures, digitized voices/sound effects, and MIDI soundtrack are very well done. Requires WIN31 and VBRUN200. A sound card is highly recommended. Lost in a Labyrinth 1.0 AddSoft $20 #20205 [3 disks] is a spectacular three dimensional maze for Windows. It uses beautiful ray-traced images to give you an accurate eyelevel perspective from within the maze. The caption of the window shows which direction you are travelling in, to help you keep your bearings. Amusing statements pop up when you bump into walls. Requires 256-color VGA display, a hard disk, and VBRUN200. Mah Jongg For Windows Balewski, Ron $20 #4914 is a full-featured version of the Mah Jongg solitaire tile game. Ten different tile sets are included; more can be created with a compatible paint program and the accompanying PCX template. Maze Master 1.01 The Flatirons Group ASP $12-$15 #4686 is a maze generating game for Windows. It can produce simple mazes suitable for young children to monster puzzles with invisible walls for adults. Solving the puzzle is achieved by dragging the mouse-shaped cursor through the maze from the entrance on the left to the exit on the right. If you get stuck, the computer can solve the maze for you. Other features include bonus scoring, high score hall of fame, maze printing, WAV sound support, and more. Mynes Freed, John $5 #4450 is a variation of the Minesweeper game included with Windows 3.1. The major difference is that you can give yourself up to five lives, so that a careless slip doesn't blow 20 minutes of work. VGA is required. NCC-1701 1.1 Analytic Associates $20 #4725 is Win31 version of the classic Star Trek type of game. Your mission is to clear the spaceways of the deadly Klingons in the alloted time. There are several Starbases scattered throughout the galaxy to assist you in repairs. VBRUN200 is included on this disk. Oil Baron 1.2 [OILBRN] (08-93 CD) Funk, Al $10 #12020 is a game of corporate takeover. The objective is to amass the largest possible amount of wealth by creating companies and trading their stock. You and your opponents take turns placing game pieces on the board, and if you place a piece next to an existing one you can create a major corporation. You can customize the size of the board, how much money each player starts off with, and more. Requires WIN31. Panzerkrieg for Windows 3.01 Blue Chip Computing, Inc. $20 #4734 is a two-player World War II combat simulation. Several scenarios are provided that allow you to command units of varying types and capabilities. This game is best played between two machines using a communications link, but it can be played on a single computer. Average game time is 3 hours. Search and Destroy 2.4 Baron, Randy $10 #4654 is a one-player game of Battleship for Windows. You and the computer alternate turns bombing locations around the grid, searching for hidden ships. It keeps a running tally of games won and lost, and a status section tells which ships have been sunk on either side. Other features include digitized speech and sound effects. S.S. BattleShip for Windows 1.1 (10-93 CD) SimoneSystems Software $20 #27866 is a multi-featured variation on the classic game of Battle Ship. Special features include Islands, mines, minesweeping, submerged submarines, the ability to move your Spy Ship, a high score hall of fame, and more. Requires VGA and a mouse. VBRUN is included on this disk. (Available on 3.5" 1.44 MegaDisk and CD only.) SPS Game Pack SP Services 15 pounds Sterling #3793 is a collection of three games for Windows. ARACHNID and TOWERS are two challenging variations of solitaire. MINES is a strategy game in which you maneuver around a grid avoiding hidden bombs. Stelly's Puzzle Potpourri James W. Stelly $15 #3549 is a collection of three classic sliding tile puzzles. Interesting background information is provided for each puzzle, and on-line help is readily available. Taipei! Norris, Dave $10 #3690 is an excellent game of Mahjongg for Windows 3.0. Features include beautiful full-color tiles, selectable BMP backgrounds, user-defined tile layouts, and an on-line help file. Several tough layouts are included. 400K of disk space is required. VB Jigsaw 1.0 $0 #12270 is a fantastic on-screen jigsaw puzzle. Unlike other jigsaw puzzles in PsL that only split the screen into small rectangles, this one gives your choice of several shapes, such as stars, circles in rectangles, elipses, and more. Any BMP graphic file can be used for a puzzle. The program will give hints if you get stuck, and can also animate the solution for you. A colorful Bart Simpson puzzle is provided. VB source code and VBRUN100 is included on this disk. WinJig 0.9 Tosa, Y. $1 #12045 is a fun jigsaw puzzle game for Windows. It allows you to use any .BMP image as the subject for the puzzle, and you can select various sizes for each puzzle. A check feature shows all incorrectly placed pieces inverted to help you solve the puzzle. Other features include WIN31 sound support, several sample graphic files, and more. WinTrek 1.4 Jaworski, Joe $20 #20134 [2 disks] is an excellent Trek-type game for Windows 3.1. It combines colorful animated graphics with authentic digitized sound clips. Your mission (as usual) is to clear your sector of hostile alien craft without being disintegrated in the process. Requires 950K of hard disk space, VGA, and a mouse. WNDomino Thompson, Bill J. $10 #4299 is a game of Double-Six dominoes for Windows. Unlike the DOS-based dominoes game (on disk GA-05: #0828), this game only lets you see the last domino played in each direction. This makes it more difficult to visualize what has been played, although a chart on the side shows that info. The game seems to be a little flakey under Windows 3.1. Despite the "flaws", this is a fun game of dominoes. VBRUN is required. CARD GAMES: =========== Bridge For Windows Full Circle Software $53 #12119 is a simple bridge game for novices. It deals random hands, but picks the best for you and the second best hand for your partner, so you don't ever get to defend. You always bid first, which limits the type of bidding you do. The bidding and play of the game are pretty weak. The user interface is cluttered, very slow, poorly designed, and buggy. To add insult to injury, the $49 (plus $4 shipping) registration fee is much higher than retail bridge games (available from PsL) like Omar Sharif ($39) and Bridge 7 ($35), both of which are much more sophisticated. So why are we adding this program? Well, for one thing, despite its short comings, it should be enjoyable for novices, and it is the only shareware bridge game for Windows. (A shareware bridge game for DOS is in the library, but is not much better.) In addition, we have seen this program raved about in other shareware catalogs which charge you for TWO disks, the second of which just has VBRUN100 on it. PsL offers it on one disk without VBRUN, which many people already have. If you need VBRUN100, you can order disk #9015 from PsL. Calculation Solitaire Thomas, Daniel ASP $15-$20 #20003/3334 is a well-done game of solitaire. Features include card dragging, saved top scores, multiple difficulty levels, hints, and more. Canfield for Windows Thomas, Daniel ASP $20 #20003/4037 is an interesting and fun variation of solitaire. If its five levels of difficulty are not enough, you can define your own levels. Other features include cheating, auto-play, hints, extensive help, and much more. This is a very nicely done game, with many challenging options. CardShark Bridge Tutor Level I Ford, Nelson ASP $25 #12079 assumes you know absolutely nothing about bridge and teaches you everything you need to know to bid and play a good, sound game. It is also a good review course for experienced players. This is an interactive tutorial which displays deals, asks frequent questions for reinforcement, and has review quizzes. Level I consists of one course on Play and four on Bidding: (1) Intro to Bridge & Opening Bids, (2) Responding to Opening Bids, (3) Rebids by Opener, (4) Competitive Bidding. The course on Play covers basic offense and defensive play. Advanced course files are commercially available covering intermediate and advanced bidding and play, conventions, specific bidding systems, etc. CardShark Hearts 4.04 [CSHEARTS] (09-93 CD) Ford, Nelson ASP $29 #4361 lets you play Hearts against three computer hands. Features include an AutoPlay/Hint mode, Show All Hands, automatic cash-in when one hand has all high cards remaining or when all points are in, animated players with digitized sounds, user selectable playing styles and strengths, and the ability to change your mind after selecting a card but before playing it. Other features include a "Duplicate" mode, which lets the computer replay your hand against the other computerized players and a Ten/Jack of Diamonds =-10 option. This is one Hearts game you will have a tough time beating. A mouse is required. (Ask for free disk #9016 if you need VBRUN200, which is also required.) Casino BlackJack for Windows 2.1s Pyramid Software Development $10 #12235 lets you play the game of blackjack against the computer. You can play from one to four decks, and start out with up to $100,000 to bet with. The game allows multiple splits and doubling down, and lets you customize the rules. Strategic hints are displayed, as well as an optional card-counting chart. This is an entertaining game with nice graphics. A 386SX or higher is recommended. Ecneuqes 1.1 [ECNEUQ] (09-93 CD) Smith, Matthew L. $10 #12476 is an unusual combination board/card game. The object of the game is to place chips on the playing board matching the corresponding card played from your hand. The first player with two rows of five chips wins the game. Features include game save/recall, multimedia sound support, two levels of play difficulty, and more. Requires VBRUN300. Pyramid Solitaire Waddell, James $0 #12236 is an interesting variation of solitaire for Windows. The object is to clear all cards from the pyramid by selecting pairs of cards that total 13 points. A mouse is required. Solitaire Pak Waddell, James $0 #12304 is a set of four card games for Windows. Included are Acey-Ducey, Golf Solitaire, Poker Solitaire, and Pyramid Solitaire. A 386-20 with 2 meg RAM is recommended, and a hard disk and VGA is required. Super Craps 1.0 for Windows [CRAPS] (08-93 CD) Chris Peterson $25 #20226 is a colorful game of craps for up to two players. It features animated rolling dice, casino-style betting, and digitized WAV files with talking commentary for systems with sound cards. This game does not provide help for novices, so you must have at least a fundamental knowledge of the game of craps. Requires VGA and a hard drive. Available on 3.5" 1.44mb MegaDisk and CD only. Super Video Poker [SVPOKE] (08-93 CD) Elton Inada $15 #12396 is a game of Jacks-or-better video poker for Windows 3.1. It will also let you play a Joker's Wild variation. Other features include clever card animations, sound effects, a probability/statistics display, best hand suggestions, user-defined payoff tables, and an autoplay mode. Games can be saved and restored, and all hands can be saved to a disk file. There is also a cheat mode, to make playing a little easier. Context-sensitive help is available at all times. Requires a 640x480 VGA display. Thieves and Kings 1.2 [THINGS] (09-93 CD) Pixel Perfect $20 #12019 contains two challenging solitaire games for Windows: King's Corners and Forty Thieves. Vegas 1.0 DeskSoft $39 #12430 is a blackjack game for Windows. It includes VBCARDS.DLL which is required by other shareware card games. VBRUN100 is included on this disk. Video Poker 1.3S [VPOKER] (08-93 CD) Pyramid Software Development $10 #12237 is a nice 5-card draw video poker game for Windows. You can bet from one to five coins, and high hands are automatically highlighted before you draw. Other features include editable payoff schedule, WAV sound support for WIN31 users, and keyboard/mouse input. WinJack 2.2 Linddicoet, Brett $12-$19 #2902 is a game of Blackjack for Windows. You can double down, split, buy insurance, and more. The program is fast, with well-done graphics and animation. This is an excellent simulation, with many playing options available. WinBJ Skylight Software $20 #4298 is an advanced casino blackjack game for Windows. Features include animated dealing, card counting help, win/loss statistics, a tutor, and much more. You can double down, split, buy insurance, and surrender. The tutor can also automatically pop up to offer help from several different playing strategies. WORD & TRIVIA GAMES: =================== Cipher for Windows Anderson, Nels ASP $17-$26 #3768 is a cryptogram-quotes game. Several puzzles are included and you can easily create more. Features include on-line help, hints, save/restore, a hall of fame, and much more. Cross Words Deluxe 1.0 [CWD] (10-93 CD) Strategic Solutions ASP $20 #12474 is an electronic crossword puzzle book for Windows. Features include clue assistance, answer peek, and auto-save of work in progress. The 25 puzzles included can be solved on screen or printed. Crossword Clipper for Windows PC Help-Line ASP $50 #4120 is a crossword puzzle layout/publishing tool for puzzles created with the DOS program Crossword Creator (#7440/1840). This program is not an editor, but a customizable viewer with a WYSIWYG display that lets you re-size the grid, select fonts, and more. It makes full use of the Windows Clipboard for pasting puzzles and clues into other applications. VBRUN is included with this package. DeQuoter 1.0 [DEQUOT] (08-93 CD) Shadoware $12 #12394 is a fantastic game that challenges you to decipher famous quotations. When one of the 200 quotes is displayed, you have five minutes to move all the letters into the correct spaces. Hints can be given at a cost of 30 seconds each. The digitized sound and music is very well done, and the 256-color animations are equally impressive. Other features include a high score list, and bonus time when your score reaches 1000. Requires Windows 3.1. A sound card is optional, but highly recommended. Grids 4 Kids Pritchett, Glenn $15 #3974 is a set of four games for children 6-10: Tic-Tac-Toe, a Concentration type game, Simon Says pattern matching, and a simple code decipher game. High scores are kept for each player. This is a very attractive, well-done package. VBRUN is included with this package, and a hard disk or high density floppy is required. Hangem 1.0 Jarrett, Eric $5 #4904 is a Windows version of the well-known word-guessing game. One or two players can play, and a game can be won with as few as 2 or as many as 30 correctly guessed words. Two-player games have the option of entering your own words for your opponent to guess. VBRUN200 is included on this disk. KBS: Crosswords for Windows KBS Systems $25 #4397 is a crossword puzzle game for Windows. Ten puzzles are included with three different skill levels available for each one. You can either drag a letter to it's intended spot, or you may click on a clue and type in the answer. Other features include a cheat mode that instantly fills in a word, the ability to save partially solved puzzles, a puzzle solve option, and more. VBRUN is required. The Scrambler 1.0 DunsonWare $7 #20162 [3 disks] is a word-scramble game. Difficulty ranges from beginner to advanced, so this game is suitable for both children and adults. To further increase the challenge you can also set time limits. Other features include a cheat mode that changes the letters to green when you have them in the correct order, digitized sound support for systems with sound cards, high score table, and more. Spin'n Win 1.0a (SNW10A) (10-93 CD) Dan Puraty $12 #12566 is a unique animated version of Wheel of Fortune for Windows 3.1. Up to three players take turns spinning for dollar amounts and trying to guess letters to solve a phrase. Features include an editable phrase file, customizable WAV sound file support, top-10 high score record, bonus rounds, and more. This is a fun game for all ages. Requires VBRUN200. <SPIN.PCX> WinWheel 1.7 [WINWHE] (09-93 CD) Mueller, Russell ASP $19 #3550 is a Wheel of Fortune type game. VBRUN100 is required. Other Games: ============ Baseball Stats 3.1 [BASESTAT] (09-93 CD) MOJO Software $25 #20257 [2 disks] keeps track of Little League, Softball, and School Baseball Team statistics. It automatically calculates the batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage of the players. A variety of sorting options are provided. After each game, you simply input the new figures and the averages will update automatically. Stats can be printed, and a phone book can also be printed. VBRUN300 is included. Basketball Stats 1.1 [BBSTAT] (09-93 CD) #20244 [2 disks] MOJO Software $25 keeps track of youth and school basketball team statistics. Averages are automatically calculated after you input the new figures after each game. It also keeps track of player names and telephone numbers. All data may be sorted and printed. VBRUN300 is included. Football Stats 1.4 [FBSTAT] (09-93 CD) MOJO Software $25 #20258 [2 disks] helps keep track of Youth and School Football Team statistics. You simply input the new figures after each game and the average and percentage fields will update automatically. It also keeps track of player names and telephone numbers. Stat sheets and phone books may be printed. VBRUN300 is included. The Cube 1.0 KillTime Software $15 #12046 is a rotating cube puzzle. Skill levels range from Beginner to Master. Requires VGA and a mouse. The Greens 1.5 [GREENV] (08-93 CD) Shadoware $22 #12302 is an exciting game of miniature golf for Windows. This version includes six challenging holes, complete with water and lava hazards, bridges, and dimensional portals. The angle of your shot and the power of your swing are controlled with the mouse. If your ball goes into the water or lava you'll have to start the hole over, so you will have to quickly learn to putt accurately. The beautiful color graphics and excellent sound effects add a high level of realism to play. Other features include an original MIDI soundtrack, up to four player competition, high scores list, and much more. 256color VGA is required. HorseCalc 1.1a Track Research $35 #12062 is an easy-to-use thoroughbred handicapping calculator. You simply enter seven data items (jockey's winning %, horse's wins, Beyer speed rating, etc.) for each horse you want to evaluate. The program will then calculate an Overall Ability Rating to help you choose the best bet. VBRUN100 is on this disk. Matches Quality Concepts $10 #3301 is a unique "Concentration" game. In addition to trying to remember/match hidden pictures, there is an option to match pictures and words. This is an excellent game for both children and adults. A hard disk is required.
